Exceptional hand-cast and hand-engraved brass candlestick, Ottoman Empire, early 19th century

Elegant large candlestick, made of solid hand-cast and hand-finished brass, most likely originating from the Ottoman Empire and dating to the early 19th century. The piece impresses with its harmonious proportions, robust construction and the refinement of the geometric decoration executed by hand-engraved and punched, a technique specific to Ottoman workshops specializing in the processing of copper alloys.

The slender body, mounted on a wide base, is adorned with successive registers of rhombuses and dotted triangles, ornamental motifs characteristic of Ottoman decorative art, inspired by the Islamic geometric repertoire. These decorations, made exclusively by hand-engraved, reflect the preference of Ottoman workshops for abstract and repetitive compositions, defining artistic metallurgy in Anatolia and the Balkans during the late Ottoman period.

The removable construction, made by means of a massive hand-made thread, is a technical detail frequently found in quality utilitarian objects intended for long-term use. The interior retains authentic traces of use and a natural patina accumulated over time, confirming the original functionality of the piece and its historical authenticity.

The impressive weight of approximately 1.625 kg, compared to its dimensions (30 × 12 cm), highlights the use of a considerable amount of metal and a solid execution, specific to objects made before the industrialization of mass production.

Such candlesticks were found in the domestic environment throughout the Ottoman territory – from Anatolia and Constantinople to Greece, Bosnia, Macedonia – and were appreciated both for their utility and decorative value. The geometric ornamental language made them suitable for various communities of the Empire, without being exclusively associated with a particular religious denomination.

Through the authenticity of the execution, the original patina, the quality of the decoration and its belonging to the tradition of Ottoman artistic metallurgy, this piece represents a valuable example of oriental decorative art from the first part of the 19th century and constitutes an acquisition of interest for collectors of Islamic & Ottoman Works of Art, Balkan art and historical brass objects.
