Ancient Greek Ceramic Column Krater with TL test - 32 cm

Italic Column Krater
Central Italy, 400–350 BC

An elegant Italic column krater dating to the late Classical period. The vessel stands 32 cm high with a maximum body diameter of 27 cm.

The krater features a rounded body set on a ringed foot, clearly separated from the body by a distinct moulding. Its most remarkable feature is the pair of arched handles, each formed by four slender vertical rods. This unusual form ultimately derives from Laconian and Corinthian prototypes, while the innovative treatment of the handles suggests production in the Etruscan or broader Central Italian cultural sphere, where Greek ceramic traditions were creatively adapted by local workshops.

Kraters were used in antiquity for mixing wine with water during banquets and symposia, making them among the most iconic vessels of the ancient Mediterranean.

The vessel is accompanied by a Thermoluminescence (TL) report issued by QED Laboratoire, confirming the ancient firing of the ceramic.
