LUC - Auguste Lucchesi - Serving plate (15) - Earthenware, Enamel

Remarkable ensemble of Vallauris artisanal ceramics, signed Auguste Lucchesi, known as “LUC”.

Consisting of 15 pieces in multicolored glazed earthenware from the period, with decidedly modern lines and vibrant colors, characteristic of the gold age of French ceramics in the 1960s-1970s.

Each piece features a two-tone contrasting decoration, alternating bright hues (anise green, red, turquoise, violet, yellow, orange, white, etc.) with a deep metallic black, highlighted by a glossy glaze. The organic, asymmetrical, and generously contoured shapes perfectly illustrate the “Space Age” aesthetic that marked the decorative arts of that era.

The set includes:

- a covered coffee pot (15 x 18 x 12 cm)
- a covered sugar bowl (4 x 9.5 x 9.5 cm)
- a milk jug (9 x 12 x 8 cm)
- eleven cups (4 x 8 x 10 cm)
- eleven saucers (10.5 x 1 cm)

Each cup features a particularly original softened triangular form, with a tubular enamelled metal handle that fully participates in the contemporary design of the set. The enamels display beautiful hues and, on some pieces, light running and intentional crystallization effects typical of Vallaurian artisanal productions.

Condition
Good overall condition considering age.
To be noted with transparency:
- a missing bit on the inner rim of the coffee pot (visible in the photographs),
- a few small nicks on certain cups and saucers (see detailed photos),
- fine signs of use consistent with an antique set.

These defects are mainly cosmetic and do not affect the decorative quality or the rarity of this complete set.

Auguste Lucchesi, known as “LUC”
The pieces are signed LUC, the signature used by Auguste Lucchesi (1913-1989), a figure of Vallaurian ceramics after World War II. Based in Vallauris since the early 1950s, he quickly developed a personal decorative language mixing modern shapes, colored glazes, and artisanal productions destined for both tableware and interior decoration. In 1961, he became president of the Vallaurienne Association for Ceramic Expansion (A.V.E.C.), actively contributing to the international prominence of Vallaurian ceramics.

Signing his works with the single name LUC, Auguste Lucchesi (1913-1989) is one of Vallauris’s emblematic ceramists from the 1950s to the 1970s. His artistic approach combines modern forms inspired by postwar design with vibrant, contrasting glazes. Crafted artisanal­ly, his pieces are distinguished by spontaneity, glaze variations, and their unique character. Part of the Vallaurian ceramic revival, LUC helped make Vallauris a premier center of French ceramic creation in the 20th century. Today, his works are valued for their vintage aesthetic and strong decorative personality.
