Snuff bottle - bamboo-form basket-weave pattern - Peking glass - DEEP-CHERRY-RED

A finely carved Chinese snuff bottle of elegant pear-shaped form, fashioned from transparent deep cherry-red glass and decorated with a continuous vertical basket-weave or bamboo-weave pattern. The crisp relief carving extends from just above the neatly finished oval foot to a raised shoulder beneath the short cylindrical neck, faithfully imitating the appearance of woven bamboo baskets. When held to the light, the rich ruby-red glass glows with remarkable brilliance, highlighting the excellent quality and translucency of the material.

The bottle is well hollowed, reflecting the high standard of workmanship associated with Qing dynasty glass production. It retains an attractive domed amber-coloured stopper mounted in a silver-toned metal collar with an integrated metal spoon. The stopper appears to be an old replacement but complements the bottle well. The glass displays only light signs of age and use, with no visible cracks or restorations. Minor wear is consistent with careful handling over time.

Basket-weave decorated snuff bottles occupy a respected place within the field of Chinese glass craftsmanship. Their design draws inspiration from woven bamboo vessels while demonstrating the technical mastery required to carve glass into convincing textile-like patterns. Comparable examples have appeared in major international auctions, where transparent deep cherry-red glass basket-weave bottles have been attributed to the period 1780–1880, while related amber examples are dated 1730–1840, illustrating the enduring popularity of this decorative style throughout the Qing dynasty.
