Dimensions:
Height: 290mm
Width: 75mm
Depth: 65mm
1. Origin and Style (Lobi Art)
Esthetic: rough and cubist: the statue bears the typical features of Lobi statuary, characterized by vigorous, angular, and minimalist forms. The gouge marks or axe-hammer marks left visible in the wood give this rough, geometric, and textured look.
Expression: The face is very stylized, elongated, with a straight nose and minimalist features that concentrate expression on verticality and sobriety.
Location: The Lobi are an ethnic group living mainly in the southwest of Burkina Faso, as well as near the borders of Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana.
2. Use and Meaning: The Bateba
Among the Lobi, these wooden statues are called Bateba (or batéba). They are not mere decorative objects, but spiritual intermediaries:
Incorporate the spirits of the bush (Thila): The Lobi believe in invisible spirits called Thila (singular: Thil), who dictate the rules of the community and protect men. The diviner (thildar) often orders the creation of a bateba to give a physical body to a spirit or to respond to its demand.
Domestic altar objects: Once carved, the statue is placed on the family or community altar (the dithil). It serves to protect the home from evil forces, illnesses, sorcery, or bad luck.
Protective or therapeutic role: Depending on its form or posture, bateba can have specialized functions: some protect against daily dangers, others promote fertility or are sculpted to express a specific emotion, such as mourning.
In summary, this 29 cm piece is a classic example of Lobi sacred statuary, carved to serve as a protective receptacle within a family altar.
