Pair of foldable perforated metal pendant lanterns – Anatolian area, attributed to Turkey – 20th century

Description
A particular pair of foldable hanging lanterns, probably originating from the Anatolian area or the eastern Mediterranean and datable approximately to the first half or mid-20th century. The lanterns feature a circular metal frame, consisting of a base and a top cap decorated with geometric diamond perforations and small floral motifs. The central part is made of fabric or light gauze, pleated, designed to unfold vertically and close completely when not in use. Each specimen is equipped with a movable iron handle for transport or suspension and a small upper opening with a hinged perforated cap. Inside there is a metal element presumably intended to receive a candle or a small light source. The collapsible structure allowed easy transport of the lanterns and protected their delicate covering during periods of non-use. The type recalls domestic and travel lanterns widespread in the Ottoman and Anatolian area, also used in outdoor environments, courtyards, and camps. A provenance more generally related to the eastern Mediterranean or Levant area cannot be ruled out. Very suggestive decorative objects, suitable for collections of folk art, ethnographic objects, historical lighting, and oriental-style home décor accessories.

Conditions
Vintage condition consistent with age and use.
There are oxidations, patina, discolorations, scratches, slight deformations, and widespread signs of use on the metal parts. The pleated fabric shows yellowing, stains, dust, and irregularities due to time.
Both lanterns retain the handles, the perforated caps, and the folding frame. Safety for use with live flame has not been checked: they are offered mainly as collectible and decorative objects. It is recommended to carefully study all photographs, which form an integral part of the description.

The lanterns will be shipped partially closed and individually protected, with particular attention to the delicate pleated covering and protruding metal parts. Careful packing and tracked shipping.
