Egyptian Glass Mummy Eye
Late Period, 664-332 BC
An Egyptian glass mummy eye dating to the Late Period (664-332 BC). Finely crafted in white, blue, and black glass. Measuring 4.7 cm in length, it was originally intended to be inserted into a funerary mask or attached to a mummy wrapping, giving the deceased a lifelike appearance and symbolically restoring sight in the afterlife.
Artificial eyes of this type formed an important element of Egyptian burial practices during the Late Period, when increasingly elaborate mummification techniques and funerary equipment reflected the belief in rebirth and eternal life. Produced by skilled glassmakers, they are remarkable examples of the sophisticated glassworking techniques developed in ancient Egypt.
Condition:
The rim is partially missing. Otherwise well preserved, with the vivid colours of the glass remaining clearly visible.
Provenance:
From the K.A. Collection, Paris (1980s–1990s).
