Description from the seller
Dance card / French aide-mémoire with silver appliqués – France, late 19th century (c. 1880–1900)
Elegant dance card or French aide-mémoire made of leather with hand-engraved silver plates on both faces.
It retains its original pencil and the interior notepad, characteristic elements of this type of personal objects used by the French bourgeoisie and high society in the late 19th century.
The decoration stands out for its excellent engraving quality. On the front, there is an allegorical composition formed by a parchment scroll, writing tools, brushes and floral motifs, symbols related to knowledge, education and the arts.
This decorative language was very popular in Belle Époque France and has affinity with the iconography used by the era's intellectual and artistic circles.
The silver plates carry two French hallmarks.
The interior preserves the original silk pocket, the pencil holder and the notepad, greatly increasing its appeal for collectors of desk objects, travel items, and personal accessories from the 19th century.
