Roman Transport Amphora, Dressel 2–4 Type – 1st Century BC–1st Century AD

A large Roman transport amphora of the Dressel 2–4 type, finely crafted in reddish light-brown terracotta. The vessel features a pointed toe, elongated torpedo-shaped body, slightly offset shoulder, cylindrical neck with a thickened rim, and characteristic double-ribbed handles.

This amphora was produced between 50 BC and 50 AD, as confirmed by a thermoluminescence analysis issued by QED Laboratoire, guaranteeing its ancient firing date.

The surface preserves attractive marine encrustations, testifying to a long period of underwater deposition and enhancing its archaeological character. The amphora remains in good display condition, with expected age-related wear, minor chips, a crack to the body and one missing handle. It is mounted on a custom metal display stand.

The Dressel 2–4 type was one of the principal transport amphorae of the early Roman Empire, widely employed for the maritime trade of wine throughout the Mediterranean.

Ex private Franconian collection, Germany, since the 1960s–1970s.
