Description from the seller
Ichiro Kojima – Tsugaru (津軽) – Original 1963 First Edition
■ Condition: Good
Tsugaru is located in western Aomori Prefecture, Japan, and is known for its harsh winters, distinctive dialect, and deeply rooted folk culture.
Ichiro Kojima (1924–1964) was a legendary photographer born in Aomori Prefecture who continued to capture the landscapes of his homeland, Tsugaru.
His career as a photographer spanned only about ten years, from the early 1950s until his death in 1964 at the age of just 39.
However, during that brief period, he left an indelible mark on the history of Japanese photography.
This is the original first edition, published by Shinchosha in 1963.
The book combines Kojima’s stark and poetic black-and-white photographs with writings by Yojiro Ishizaka and Kyozo Takagi, both closely associated with Aomori. Together, the photographs and texts evoke the severe climate, rural landscapes and distinctive spirit of Tsugaru.
The cover features artwork by Junichiro Sekino, a renowned woodblock print artist also born in Aomori.
I once had the opportunity to view Mr. Kojima’s works at the Aomori Museum of Art.
They were truly magnificent pieces, and I was deeply moved.
I sincerely hope that you, too, will experience their charm.
■ Condition Details
The book shows age-related wear consistent with its age. There is tanning and foxing to the outer case, cover and white areas of the pages, as well as some signs of use. Some sections show signs of having been opened and may remain slightly open.
Despite these signs of age, the photographic plates remain in good condition and retain their strong visual quality.
Please refer carefully to the photographs for the condition.
