Rarest historical parchment document from 1755 issued by Pope Benedict XIV (Prospero Lambertini, pope from 1740 to 1758).

Analysis and Meaning of the DocumentAltare Privilegiato: The document grants the privilege of the Privileged Altar to the church of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr in Castelfranco (historic comune of the Diocese of Ventimiglia, today known as Castel Vittorio in Liguria).
Indulgence for the Deceased: The privilege provides that when a priest celebrates Mass on that particular altar on three days of the week established by the bishop, the soul of the deceased for whom the Mass is offered is granted a plenary indulgence. This has the effect of freeing the soul from the penalties of Purgatory ("a purgatorii poenis liberetur").
The Treasury of the Church: The theological mechanism rests on the "Thesauros Ecclesiae" (the treasure of merits accumulated by Christ and the Saints), applied in the form of suffrage.
Place of issue: The document was signed in Rome at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore ("apud S. Mariam Majorem"), under the seal of the Ring of the Fisherman ("sub Annulo Piscatoris"), the official formula for papal briefs.
Date: The day is 7 November (die vij November). The year in Roman numerals starts with MD... (c. 1750), consistent with Benedict XIV's pontificate (1740-1758).
Tax exemption: The handwritten note at the bottom (Gratis pro Deo) indicates that the act was issued free of charge for devotional reasons, without payment of the usual chancery fees.
