Rare, heavy antique Belgian apothecary mortar in solid bell bronze with matching original pestle. With square ears. Circa 1890 - 1920

This is the classic French/Belgian model with the characteristic square ears, dating from around 1890-1920. Cast in bronze with a very high tin content (bell bronze), which you hear in the bright, long-lasting tone when lightly tapped. Made for daily intensive use in the pharmacy, therefore much heavier and thicker-walled than the later decorative models.

The inside shows authentic signs of use and wear, the outside has been lightly polished recently, allowing the bronze to come out beautifully. Ideal as a functional object for herbs, spices and nuts, or as a centerpiece in a kitchen, apothecary cabinet, or curios collection.
