Wall shelf unit - Wood

Pair of Portuguese wall brackets, executed in solid walnut wood, carved and patinated, attributable to the late 19th century, approximately 1890–1920. They feature semicircular tops with a beaded/rounded edge, supported by bodies richly carved. The decoration consists of broad acanthus leaves, volutes, 'C'-shaped scrolls, berry friezes and fluted elements, arranged symmetrically around a central shell-shaped inset. The lower zone ends in a prominent hanging vegetal motif. The composition and abundance of carving place it in the Portuguese neo-Baroque style, Joanine-inspired, recovering decorative models from the reign of João V, but with revivalist execution characteristic of the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. Wood with a dark brown tone and a uniform patina. Signs of use and traces of inactive woodcarvers, consistent with age. Dimensions: 31 × 32 × 17 cm each.
