Portuguese centerpiece in cut green doublé crystal and 833 silver, D. José style – late 19th century. Centerpiece or Portuguese epergne, oval in shape, consisting of a cup in green and colorless crystal, extensively faceted, with raised and engraved silver mounts. The cup features a geometric decoration composed of lozenges, diamond points, starched reserves and cross-hatched texture bands, obtained by cutting away the outer green layer to reveal the colorless crystal underneath. The rim is surrounded by a pierced and interlaced silver grille. The framework has two broad side handles cut in scrolls, adorned with acanthus leaves and swirls. The front and back display central cartouches flanked by flowers, foliage and shell motifs. It rests on an oval molded base, raised on four scroll feet with vegetal decoration. The decorative composition is in the style of the Portuguese King D. José or Portuguese neorococo, reviving the eighteenth-century Rocaille repertoire, namely curved lines, shell, scrolls and acanthus leaves. With the Porto mark “Javali II,” corresponding to 833 thousandths silver and used between 1887 and 1937. It shows signs of use and flaws in the crystal (cracked, glued, and missing parts).
