Description from the seller

Russian Orthodox icon – Christ Pantocrator (Spas Vsederzritel) – circa 1880–1910

Authentic Russian Orthodox icon of Christ Pantokrator (Christ the Almighty), painted in tempera on a traditional wooden panel with a gesso ground (levkas) and rich gilding.

The icon shows Christ seated on a richly adorned throne, with an opened Gospel in Church Slavonic in the left hand and the right hand pointing to the Holy Scriptures. Above the image are the traditional inscriptions “ІС ХС” (Jesus Christ) and “Спас Вседержитель” (Christ the Almighty).

The panel is executed with a recessed painting surface (kovcheg) and provided with two original crossbars on the back, characteristic of traditional Russian icon painting from the late Tsarist period.

The icon possesses a warm original patina and shows normal signs of use and aging, appropriate for an object over a century old. The gilding is largely intact and the painting is in good overall condition.
