Bureau plat - Chestnut - Baroque Style Desk

Portuguese ceremonial desk, carved in rich dark brown wood, inspired by Baroque / King John V, produced in the second half of the 19th century. Rectangular body with a cinched waist, lavishly decorated with exuberant high-relief carving, featuring vegetal scrolls, shellwork, angel masks and sphinxes, characteristic elements of the Portuguese Baroque revival of the nineteenth century. Supported on four legs with an elegant curved profile, terminating in claw-and-ball feet. The front presents a dynamic silhouette following the waistline, while the sculptural decoration extends across the uprights and rails, imparting great richness and a notable scenic effect. The top is framed by a beaded frieze, with sober lines contrasting with the exuberance of the carving. A piece of high artistic and technical quality, representative of Portuguese historicist taste in the second half of the 19th century, intended for interiors of ceremonial furniture. Dimensions: 85 × 130 × 89 cm. Condition: Shows signs of use compatible with age, including small wear, scratches, and signs of handling. Maintains good structural integrity and quality of carving. The presence of sphinxes and angelic figures integrated into the decoration is uncommon in ordinary Portuguese desks and brings the piece closer to productions of workshops specialized in ceremonial furniture, where sculptural richness was valued over functional simplicity.
