Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1945, Sean Scully has achieved international fame as one of the most admired contemporary abstract painters. By fusing the traditions of European painting with the distinctive character of American abstraction, Scully's great achievement is to have revitalized abstract painting with metaphorical, philosophical, and sublime elements, blending them with the earthly tangibility of color.
