Zoom binoculars - 1850-1900 - France - Chevalier

Presented here is an extremely rare and probably very early opera glass from the formerly very famous manufactury family Chevalier-Paris! Signed on the eyecups! Estimated around 1880—very good condition, minimal patina and absolutely functional!

It belonged to one of the most significant manufacturers of scientific instruments in France and decisively shaped the development of high-quality theater glasses.

Features and history
The makers: The Chevalier family (including Vincent, Charles and Arthur) produced optical devices in Paris from around 1760. A true antique piece is often recognizable by engravings such as "Chevalier Paris" or "Chevalier Opticien" on the oculars.
Materials: Typical for the Belle Époque elite were cases made of brass, often adorned with mother-of-pearl, enamel, ivory or fine leather.
Technique: Most are Galileo telescopes with a central focusing wheel. The magnification is often in the 2- to 3-fold range, which was ideal for the short distances in the theater.

Here is a glass whose oculars, pulps with the finest iridescent mother-of-pearl are completely enveloped in an extraordinarily good preserved condition!
The eyecups are also signed with the company name!
The body made of gilded brass and presumably a zinc alloy reflects a harmonious contrast...

The view is excellent despite the advanced age!
