Mboko cup-bearer figure in African art
Among the most famous works by Baluba sculptors, the figures called "cup-bearers" traditionally known as "Mboko" stand at the crossroads of two institutions: divination and prophecy. Their corpus reveals several workshops that flourished as the kingdom expanded. The cup-bearing statue was placed beside the diviner during trance and represented the spouse of the spirit that possesses him.
