Skull and crossed tibias (Memento Mori) - 19th century - Rome - Private Collection.
A rare funerary or liturgical decorative element painted on metal, depicting a skull surmounting two crossed tibias, mounted on a diamond-shaped panel.
According to the old annotation retained on the reverse, this piece would have come from one of the large chandeliers arranged around the catafalque during Catholic funeral ceremonies prior to the liturgical reforms of Vatican II.
The candles used were yellow wax.
Good condition with wear, chips and signs of aging consistent with its age and use. Provenance: former Brussels gallery (handwritten label on the reverse).
