Rare instrument of monastic penitence – Beaumont Monastery (Belgium) – 19th century - Private collection.

Penitential instrument originating from the Poor Clares Colettine of Beaumont, consisting of a chain-metal discipline and a cilice in the shape of a cross made of twisted wire.

The two handwritten notes attached specify the instrument’s use in convent life and indicate a direct provenance from the Mother Superior of Beaumont Monastery, at the monastery’s liquidation on September 10, 1986.

Rare testimony to the practice of corporeal penance in a women’s monastery.
