Description from the seller

Golden postage stamp of Hugo Grotius in original packaging including Certificate.

Hugo Grotius was born in 1583 in Delft. At eleven years old, De Groot begins his study of Law at the newly established university in Leiden. The young Grotius proves to be an intellectual all-rounder. At fifteen Hugo Grotius travels as a special adviser with raadpensionaris Johan van Oldenbarnevelt to the French court, to seek support in the rebellion against Spain. The French king is full of praise for him and calls him the Dutch Wonderkind.

During the Twelve Years' Truce (1609-1621) a political and religious conflict escalates in the Dutch Republic. Johan van Oldenbarnevelt stands opposite stadtholder Prince Maurits. As adviser to Oldenbarnevelt, Grotius becomes one of the main players in this conflict. In 1618 Maurits has his opponents imprisoned. Oldenbarnevelt is condemned to death by Maurits, Grotius is sentenced to life imprisonment in Loevestein Castle, near Gorinchem.

In 1621 Grotius manages to escape thanks to a plan by his wife Maria van Reigersberch. He regularly receives books from Gorinchem, which are brought in a box and collected again. On 22 March Maria and maid Elsje van Houweningen place the delivered books in bed, making it look as if Grotius lies there. Grotius climbs into the box, and thus he is carried out of the fortress to Gorinchem. He then flees to Antwerp. The rest of his life he spends as a banished person abroad. He dies in 1645 in Rostock.
