Icon - Wood - The Burning Bush

Mother of God "The Burning Bush" (in Russian, Неопалимая Купина – Neopalimaya Kupina). It is one of the most complex and symbolic Marian representations in the Russian tradition.

In the center, the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, depicted as the Theotokos (Mother of God).
The eight-pointed star, formed by two superimposed rhombi:
The dark rhombus, studded with stars, represents the divine mystery and the bush that burned without being consumed.
The light rhombus symbolizes the light and the fire of God’s presence.
The eight archangels, distributed around the star, guard the mystery of the Incarnation and emphasize the celestial nature of the composition.
Significance

This icon draws inspiration from the Exodus passage (3:2-5), when Moses beholds the burning bush that is not consumed. Orthodox tradition interprets that bush as a prefiguration of the Virgin Mary: just as the bush contained the divine fire without being destroyed, Mary bore the Word of God in her womb while remaining ever Virgin.

In addition to its deep theological meaning, this icon has traditionally been regarded in Russia as a protector against fires, lightning, and other calamities, which is why it was common to find it in homes and even in fire stations.

In terms of painting style, the color palette, the inscription in ecclesiastical Slavonic, and the craquelé of the golden background, it appears to be a Russian work from the late 18th or 19th century. The composition is the classical version of Neopalimaya Kupina, with fairly fine drawing of the angels and well-executed iconography.
