Icon - Wood - Saint Pantaleon

This icon represents Saint Pantaleon (in Orthodox tradition, Saint Panteleimon), one of the most venerated medical saints in the East. The identification is clear by his traditional attributes: the box of medicines he holds in his left hand and the spatula or pharmacist’s spoon in his right, in addition to the small martyr’s cross.

Box of ointments or medicines: symbol of his profession as a physician.
Spatula or spoon: instrument used to prepare or administer remedies.
Cross: recalls his martyrdom during Diocletian’s persecution, around the year 305.
Youthful and beardless face: it is the usual representation of Saint Pantaleon in Byzantine and Russian icons.
