Cypriot Terracotta Red Polished Jug - 12 cm

Characteristic Cypriot jug made of finely fired Red Polished Ware, one of the most important ceramic traditions of Bronze Age Cyprus. The vessel features an almost globular body, a tall cylindrical neck with a flaring trefoil spout, and a sturdy strap handle connecting the shoulder to the rim.

The entire surface is decorated with carefully incised geometric ornamentation. Encircling lines, zigzag bands, and diagonal incised patterns are highlighted with white lime inlay, creating a striking contrast against the burnished reddish-brown surface. The neck and handle are likewise decorated in the characteristic manner of this ceramic tradition.

Vessels of this type were probably used for pouring water, wine, or oil and served both in everyday domestic life and as funerary offerings. The harmonious proportions and finely executed incised decoration make this piece an attractive and representative example of Cypriot Bronze Age pottery.

Condition:
Well preserved. Showing age-related wear, minor surface abrasion, small chips, and scattered calcareous deposits. No obvious modern restorations are visible. Overall, an authentic and visually appealing collector's piece from the Cypriot Bronze Age.

Provenance:
Formerly in the Madeleine & Erich Dammann Collection, Germany. Acquired during the owners' extensive travels between 1950 and 1970. The collection has been documented in Germany since 1970 and has remained in continuous family ownership ever since. As was customary for private purchases made in local markets during the 1950s–1970s, purchase receipts or invoices were generally neither issued nor requested. The provenance is therefore documented through the family's continuous ownership, historical photographs, and supporting biographical records.
