Description from the seller
Antique 19th-century knijpertjes iron / kniepertjes iron – wrought iron with decorative baking plates
A beautiful and authentic 19th-century knijpertjes iron, a traditional baking tool used to make thin wafers, also called kniepertjes or New Year's rolls. This type of iron was used above an open fire or in the hearth and is a fine example of historical domestic equipment from a time when cooking was still artisanal.
The iron is made of wrought iron and consists of long handles that allow it to be held safely over the fire. At the end are two heavy round baking plates that close together to bake the batter into a thin cookie.
The baking plates are richly decorated with a decorative relief featuring flowers, vines, and birds, a typical motif for knijpertjes irons from the 18th and 19th centuries. When the batter was baked in the iron, a beautiful pattern appeared in the waffles. Such decorations made baking not only functional but also festive, especially around the turn of the year when these wafers were traditionally made.
Due to the robust wrought-iron construction and the decorative pattern, this object today is also highly prized as a collectible, kitchen antique, or decorative wall piece.
