Lot of natural cobbles (clasts) – Costa Dorada, Spain – Mineralogical and petrographic selection
Technical Description of the Lot
This lot is composed of a selection of cobbles (continental clasts) collected on the shore of the Costa Dorada (Tarragona, Spain). Each piece has undergone a natural process of marine abrasion and mechanical erosion over a prolonged geological period, resulting in a sub-spherical and ellipsoidal morphology with smooth-polished surface textures, free of sharp edges.

Petrographic and Mineralogical Classification of the Lot:
The collection offers a representative sample of the region’s coastal geology, highlighting the following lithological families:
Siliceous Rocks (Quartz and Chert): Specimens of high hardness (~7 on the Mohs scale). They appear in translucent, milky varieties and with iron oxide patinas that grant yellowish and orange tones.
Jaspers (Microcrystalline Quartz variety): Clasts colored red and ochre due to microinclusions of hematites and other iron oxides. They exhibit the typical concoidal fracture.
Plutonic Igenous Rocks (Granites): Phaneritic texture of medium-fine grain. Visible composition of quartz, potassic feldspar (orthoclase) and micas (biotite/muscovite), yielding the characteristic mottled appearance or “checkerboard texture.”
