Antique stoneware jug / storage bottle – ca. 1875 – rustic 19th-century ceramics
A characterful 19th-century stoneware jug or storage bottle, dating from circa 1875. This type of robust ceramic jugs was widely used in the 19th century for storing and transporting liquids such as oil, vinegar, alcohol, ink, or other household liquids.
The jug is made of high-fired stoneware with a warm dark brown iron glaze. By firing at a high temperature, stoneware becomes very hard, nearly waterproof, and especially durable. This made such jugs highly suitable for daily use in households, workshops, and trade.
The form is classic for utilitarian jugs from the second half of the 19th century: a slender cylindrical body, softly rounded shoulders and a narrow neck with a pouring rim. Around the shoulder there are several turned rings, a subtle detail that is often found on hand-turned stoneware from this period.
