Russian brass icon – Christ as King of Kings and Great High Priest – 19th century

An impressive and exceptionally richly detailed Russian Orthodox icon, cast in brass and dating from the 19th century. At the center is Christ depicted as King of Kings and Great High Priest, a solemn iconographic representation in which His royal, priestly and divine authority come together.

Christ is shown frontally with a large cross nimbus around the head. He wears richly decorated liturgical garments and a tall, crown-shaped headdress. His right hand is raised in a blessing gesture, while He holds an open Gospel in the left hand. The depiction adheres to the Orthodox Pantocrator tradition, in which Christ is shown as ruler, teacher and judge of the world.

On both sides are floral panels with stylized tendrils and Church Slavonic inscriptions. The inscriptions presumably refer to the titles Tsar of Tsars and Great High Priest. The entire scene is surrounded by a particularly finely worked decorative border with symmetrical flowers, curls and geometric ornaments.

Russian metal icons were cast in copper alloys such as brass and bronze. Especially in the 19th century, production flourished, and such icons were widely used within Orthodox and Old Believer communities. They were sturdy, portable and suitable for both home devotion and travel. The reliefs were usually cast in a mold and then locally touched up or celled.

The combination of the monumental Christ figure, the opened Gospel book, the Church Slavonic inscriptions and the exuberant floral surround makes this a particularly decorative and collectible example of Russian religious metalwork.

At the top there are two protrusions. These may indicate that the icon was originally part of a larger composite whole, for example a travel icon, triptych or home altar. The original side panels or connection elements are no longer present.

The icon is in an authentic antique condition. Visible are signs of use and age, including patina, discoloration, slight distortion of the edges, scratches and localized wear. These natural traces emphasize the age and give the brass a warm, well-traveled appearance. Please examine the photos carefully; they form an important part of the description.
