Description from the seller

Neo-Renaissance Copper Champagne and Wine Cooler with Mythological Reliefs

Decorative copper champagne and wine cooler featuring richly embossed ornamentation and oval medallions depicting mythological scenes.

Made from pressed copper sheet, this industrially produced piece was most likely manufactured between 1890 and 1915. Its design combines Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque influences that were highly fashionable at the turn of the 20th century.

The body is covered with finely detailed ornamentation, scrollwork, beaded borders, and figurative reliefs. The oval medallions depict putti, centaurs, and allegorical mythological figures, giving the piece a distinctive and highly decorative appearance.

The surface is almost entirely covered with decoration, reflecting the horror vacui (“fear of empty space”) aesthetic that was popular during the Historicist period. This artistic approach deliberately avoids large undecorated areas, filling them instead with ornamental motifs, mythological scenes, scrolls, and decorative details. Such rich and abundant embellishment is characteristic of late 19th-century Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque decorative arts.

The twisted swing handles on either side are both functional and visually harmonious with the elaborate decoration. Over time, the copper has developed a natural patina that enhances the depth and character of the relief work.

Originally intended as a wine or champagne cooler, the piece also serves beautifully today as an interior decorative object, planter, or collector’s item.

Condition is consistent with its age and remains excellent. Free from dents, cracks, repairs, or structural damage. The surface displays an attractive natural patina and minor age-related signs of use.
