Moldavite is a natural transparent mineral exhibiting numerous green hues. It is the result of meteorite impact residue, and it is classified in the tectite family. Moldavite crystals were formed about fifteen million years ago, in western Bavaria, Germany, after a meteorite impact.
The origin of its name comes from the Vltava River, which is called Moldau in German, the region where it was found, which gives us the name Moldavite.
This rare stone is closely linked to the Moldava river, which snakes for about 6,000 km² along its course, conferring the gem its evocative name.
The German geologist and mineralogist A.G. Werner (1750 – 1817) called it the “bottle-stone” due to its green color, reminiscent of a bottle’s glass.
