Bedspread - 246 cm - 255 cm

Impressive pure silk double bedspread of large dimensions from the late 1800s to early 1900s in the Louis-Philippe style.

Given its ample measurements, it is made up of two silk panels sewn together on the inside, so only a central seam is visible, but this does not diminish its beauty. They were sewn so finely that the embroidery and patterns align perfectly.

A detail that becomes noticeable only when you get close. In the past it was common to sew fabrics for different uses, diversifying them.

As for color, the background is light blue, while the embroidered designs are gold. It is all embroidery, with circles worked with outer lines to enrich it, and in the center a flower. Beneath are embroidered weeping willows like leaves of a tree. It is all a geometric workmanship with these designs placed asymmetrically—one at the top and one at the bottom. It is not the classic damask, but embroidery with patterns arranged as if it were a tapestry. This workmanship continues on the two side parts and at the foot of the bed.

It is of broad proportions, precisely because ancient beds were higher; in fact, on my bed, which even though from the 1700s has modern slats, it almost touches the floor. It measures 246 cm in length and 255 cm in width, to which a 14 cm fringe must be added, so it fits a bed perfectly. A straight, simple fringe that echoes the colors of the bedspread.

It was made for me by my family precisely for the beauty of the colors and the type of silk, but it is evident it was used very little because the silk is in excellent condition, as is the fringe. Many linens were made—thinking of the dowry to be given to children—and given the large number of bedspreads, I found many that have never been used. The fact that it has two small stains typical of cashing, which I photographed, attests to its age and shows that it is an antique bedspread, but they do not diminish its beauty. The very high quality is the pure silk used.

I thus wrote “good condition” precisely because of these two stains; otherwise it is in excellent condition.

My ancestors placed great importance on the home and loved renewing the drapes, always having linens made that expressed beauty and refinement. It is of wide dimensions, including the fringe, because, as I have already written, ancient beds were higher and thus it fits a bed perfectly, reaching to the floor.

It is part of the dowry I inherited, and given the large number of bedspreads in various fabrics and colors, many of which I am selling so they can have a new life. Given its ample size, I have also used it as a sofa cover, for the beauty of its colors, and as a tablecloth laid on a wall-adjacent table, reaching to the floor, with a white embroidery on top to display the designs.

It easily pairs with the colors, fabrics, and drapes of a home. Beautiful to use on an antique bed to highlight its importance, but it also stands out on a simple modern bed. In fact, it would add a touch of elegance and sophistication. It fits easily with classic or modern decor. When something is beautiful, there is always a use for it. One only needs imagination and to love the home furnishings in which one lives. Every home reflects the taste and refinement of its inhabitants. Whoever buys it will decide what use to make of it.

Because of its size, the bedspread will be shipped well-wrapped with lots of bubble wrap and placed in a sturdy box to maximize protection.
