Description from the seller
Superb and imposing Napoleon III / Empire-style inkwell for the desk, in massive green marble and patinated and gilded bronze, dating from the second half of the 19th century (c. 1870–1890).
Description & Decoration:
Central subject: Bronze sculpture depicting an imperial eagle with wings spread, placed on a molded bronze pedestal.
Base: Massively rectangular marble plinth in veined green marble (Mer Green type), with a front cassole for pencils and penholders carved into the facade.
Inkwells: Flanked by two circular bronze receptacles chased with a laurel frieze motif and hinged articulated lids.
Interior: Noteworthy and highly sought-after detail — the inkwell retains its two inner porcelain bowls, white enamel, original, intact and without cracks.
Condition:
Very good overall condition for a 19th-century object. Beautiful original patina on the bronzes. The marble retains its shine, hinges fully functional. Note a chip / small loss at the top corner of the green marble base.
