Timeless elegance turned into engineering. Official document and representation of the Mercedes-Benz 280 SL, the most refined and powerful version of the renowned W113 series, introduced in the late 1960s as the culmination of a concept that united sportiness, safety, and sophistication. Universally known as the “Pagoda” for the distinctive concave shape of its hardtop, this model became a symbol of style and distinction.

The 280 SL Pagoda represents Mercedes-Benz’s vision of a modern roadster: solid, balanced, and technologically advanced for its time. Its design, the work of Paul Bracq, leaned toward clean lines, harmonious proportions, and sober elegance that avoided excess. The iconic Pagoda roof, besides its aesthetic value, met structural and safety criteria, reflecting the brand’s obsession with technical innovation.

Under its long hood sat a 2.8-liter inline-six with mechanical fuel injection, capable of around 170 hp. Paired with a four-speed manual gearbox —or an optional automatic— and tuned for dynamic comfort, it offered a smooth, progressive, and refined drive, without giving up respectable performance for its era.

The chassis, derived from the brand’s sedans, and the inclusion of deformable zones demonstrated an ahead-of-its-time approach to safety. The 280 SL was not a radical sports car, but a well-balanced grand tourer designed to cover long distances with elegance and poise.

Between 1968 and 1971, the 280 SL established itself as the most coveted version of the W113 saga, especially in the American market. Today it is one of Mercedes-Benz’s most admired and valuable classics: a piece that embodies the German sophistication of the 1960s and an era when luxury and sportiness coexisted with naturalness and style.
