Alfons Mucha (July 24, 1860 – July 14, 1939) was born into a devoutly religious family in Ivančice, a small town in Moravia (located in the present-day Czech Republic). He was a representative artist of the Art Nouveau movement that flourished in Paris during the early 20th century.
His work incorporates the elegant rendering of forms and outlines found in Japanese woodblock prints, the lavish colors and geometric decorative effects of Byzantine art, and the intricate, sensuous depictions characteristic of Baroque and Rococo styles. Through the use of evocative decorative lines, clean contours, and bright watercolor effects, he created a distinctive style of figure illustration known as the "Mucha Style."
