Description from the seller
Great Altarpiece Tabernacle in polychrome and gilt wood with original key – Italy – Late 19th century
Important Italian-area altar tabernacle, made in the second half of the 19th century, entirely in carved, shaped wood and finely decorated with polychromy and leaf gilding.
The architecture is fully Baroque in taste, with an elegant arched façade, rich lateral volutes and a refined alternation between gilded surfaces and sage green backgrounds, a chromatic scheme typical of Italian liturgical furnishings of the 1800s.
The central door is adorned with a splendid depiction of the Eucharistic Chalice surmounted by the radiated Host bearing the monogram IHS, a quintessential Christological symbol, surrounded by a radiant nimbus and sculpted clouds that give depth and a strong scenographic impact.
The interior retains its original quilted silk lining, a rare feature still present and testimony to the liturgical use of the piece. It is complete with the original key and a perfectly functioning lock.
From a conservation standpoint it is in excellent overall condition considering the extremely delicate materials and the age of the work. Normal signs of time are present, small wear to the gilding and polychromy consistent with over a century of history, small restorations to the painting. The small door opens and closes regularly, a bit tightly; the closure does not align perfectly, a purely constructional detail that in no way compromises the stability, functionality, or the exceptional aesthetic harmony of the artifact.
The large size, the presence of the original key, the interior lined in silk, and the state of conservation make this tabernacle an increasingly rare example on the antique market.
Our interior designer/architect recommends placing it as an important decorative element in a historic residence, a sacred art collection, a professional studio, or a classical environment where it can become the focal point of the décor thanks to its strong visual presence.
