Coffee table - Metal, Glass - Belle Époque

European-made coffee table, probably French, dating to the late 19th century, executed in the historicist taste, with Louis XV/Rococo Revival inspiration. It presents a circular structure in cast metal, chiselled, painted and partially gilded, of light, openwork construction. The waist is encircled by a composition of scrolls, volutes, sinuous rods and small floral elements, forming a delicate ornamental frieze beneath the top. It rests on three curved feet, arranged radially and connected by a central truss. The feet feature turned elements and raised applications of acanthus leaves, palmettes, rosettes and other botanical motifs. The lower section is enriched with large circular scrolls, small sprays, floral buttons and flower-shaped medallions, giving the piece a lively and balanced silhouette. At the center, the lattice converges into an ornamental core composed of stylised foliage, flowers and voluted elements, reinforcing the tripartite symmetry of the structure. The contrast between the painted metal in a brownish tone and the gilded or patinated elements enhances the relief of the decoration and emphasizes the antique character of the piece. The circular top consists of a transparent glass plate set in a metal frame. The transparency of the glass allows full observation of the richness of the base’s decorative work. Given the exuberance of the scrolls, the use of acanthus leaves and flowers, and the asymmetrical, naturalistic character of some elements, the table sits within the Rococo Revival taste, very widespread in France and other European centers during the second half of the 19th century. The presence of more structured and symmetrical elements also reveals the influence of decorative furniture from the Napoleonic III period and the Belle Époque. It shows signs of use and antiquity compatible with its age.
