A Baule colonial statue from the Yamoussoukro region, Ivory Coast.
An authentic wood figure in good condition; the paint shows signs of wear and flaking, evidence of long-term use.
This colonial figure has a characteristically styled hairstyle with an upright posture and Western clothing. The head and visible body parts are painted in bright red. The facial features are voluminous with a broad, flat nose and a full mouth. Notably, the large hands rest flat on the thighs,
The figure is mounted on a trapezoidal black display base.
This colonial figure belongs to a special group of West African sculptures created during the colonial era and in the 20th century. Such representations reflect the meeting of local artistic traditions with new social realities and document the incorporation of foreign clothing, lifestyles, and status symbols into the Baule image culture. They are not merely depictions of colonial presence, but rather autonomous artistic interpretations of societal transformation processes.
