HISTORY/DOCUMENTATION
This beautiful 'Big Healey' was built on 12 August 1964 and shipped to the favorable climate of the United States on 21 August. In 1995 the car was imported into the Netherlands, after which it was expertly restored (Michiel Capelle Austin Healey restorations). The invoice for this restoration, worth almost 90,000 guilders, is still available! To this day the quality of the restoration is evident in the car.
Also many other documents accompany the car, such as appraisal reports, maintenance invoices and labels from many rallies in which the car participated. In 2025 the car was appraised at €75,000. Up to 1995 (for 30 years) the car had always been owned by the same family. The reliability of the car is proven by the long distances it has covered in many rallies abroad, such as the Alpine Rally.
Old photos show how much fun this car has provided. In addition, it has always been cared for with love and passion. This most beloved, final series of the Big Healey is now looking for the next enthusiast. The car is still in use, so the odometer is creeping up slightly.
EXTERIOR
Underneath the car has been prepared for rallying, but visually the car remains very original. Finished in its original color combination 'California Red' with a black vinyl interior, it is a striking and tasteful car to behold. The set is complete thanks to the handsome chrome-spoked wheels and the chrome luggage rack. The black soft top is easily and properly operated.
It can be neatly covered with a red tonneau cover. The paint is beautiful and the seams are fitting, giving the lines of this Healey an exceptionally pretty appearance. Only minimal signs of use are present, including small dents between the bonnet and the windscreen.
INTERIOR
The interior is also fairly original with minimal signs of wear. Thanks to the rear seat, a total of 4 people can be seated. The interior is finished in black and includes, among other things, heating. A rally tripmeter is mounted in the dashboard glovebox. The wooden dashboard features a clear speedometer and tachometer, placed directly in front of the driver. The boot space is also tidy and provides room for a spare wheel.
TECHNICAL
The engine is built with components from 'Denis Welch' Motorsport, well known among Austin-Healey enthusiasts. Think of, among other things, an aluminum sump pan. Under the hood, further improvements were made to optimize the car’s technical performance, such as a new stainless steel exhaust, telescopic shock absorbers around, a rear axle stabilizer bar, a Kenlo fan for extra cooling, a plastic cooling fan on the water pump for better cooling, an alternator, electronic ignition and a high-torque starter motor. In addition, the car is equipped with a special spring package that provides more ground clearance.
The original spring package was quite low, causing speed bumps to be easily struck. In 2008 major engine maintenance was carried out by a specialist in vintage engine rebuilds. The car runs, shifts and brakes well. The 2,912cc inline-6 engine delivers a wonderful sound (see video) and is linked to a manual five-speed transmission with a fifth overdrive. It is a pleasure to drive the car, thanks in part to powerful brakes (for the time, advanced drum brakes at the front) and a low center of gravity that provides an exceptional cornering experience. In short: unmatched purity of an iconic English roadster from the 1960s that is ready for its new owner.
GENERAL
The Austin-Healey 3000 was introduced in 1959 and produced through 1967. The 3000 succeeded the 100-6. This previous model had an engine with a smaller displacement (2.6 liters) and fewer horsepower compared to the 3000, which featured a 3-liter engine with 130 hp. Austin Healeys were very successful in racing and rallies at the time. An example is BMC team driver Pat Moss, sister of Sir Stirling Moss. She achieved 4th place in the Liège-Rome-Liège rally in Belgium in an Austin-Healey 100/6 and won the first of her five European Rally Championships for women. In 1960 Moss achieved the overall victory in Liège-Rome-Liège in an Austin-Healey 3000 and finished 2nd in the Coupe des Alpes.
The MkIII was announced in February 1964 and is the most developed 'Big Healey' and is therefore regarded as the best driving Healey, partly because it is the most powerful and fastest. It has a power of 148 hp thanks to a new camshaft with a higher lift. Its predecessor had 136 hp. Power steering was standard, and SU HD8 carburetors replaced the HS6 units. The dashboard was fitted with a clear speedometer and tachometer, placed directly in front of the driver. The MkIII was produced until the end of 1967, after which production of the 3000 ceased.

Disclaimer
Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
