Description from the seller

Elegant pair of Portuguese columns or pedestals, executed in the 19th century in carved walnut wood, framed and partially gilded. Of tall, slender proportions, they feature a triangular-section structure, developed from architectural bases with a cut, framed profile. The bases are decorated on the different faces with geometric reserves outlined by fine gilded fillets, creating a discreet contrast with the warm, deep tone of the wood. The lower body rises through a succession of stepped elements and projecting moldings, leading to a striking carved ring with gomated decoration. Above this develops a bulbous element richly carved with stylized leaves and vegetal motifs, which bestows greater sculptural richness to the ensemble. The long fluted shafts, slightly tapered, are structured by pronounced edges and enriched by vertical fluting highlighted in gilding. At the top they terminate in composite capitals of gomate rings, overlapping moldings, and stepped architectural elements. The tops, also triangular in shape with softly curved contour, feature projecting moldings and a smooth surface, suitable for placing sculptures, vases, urns, or other decorative objects. The combination of walnut wood with gilded accents, the verticality of the composition, and the architecture- and plant-inspired decoration confer a scenographic and solemn presence to the pair. They constitute decorative elements particularly suitable for classical interiors, galleries, entrances, salons, or symmetrical frames for doors, mirrors, and works of art. They show natural patina, small marks and superficial wear, signs of use compatible with the age and character of the pieces, coherent with the antiquity of the set.
