Description from the seller
Antique French Royal Portrait Pendant Hook – Marie Antoinette Style (Pattern No. 30)
(c. 1880s–1920s)
An authentic small decorative cast-brass wall pendant hook featuring a Neoclassical relief profile portrait of Queen Marie Antoinette (originally produced as a matching pair alongside King Louis XVI of France).
While the portrait artwork captures the iconic style created to commemorate the couple's 1770 royal wedding, this brass piece was manufactured during the late 19th to early 20th century (c. 1880s–1920s) during the French Louis XVI Revival period.
Authenticity & Maker Mark
Foundry Stamp: Authenticated on the reverse lower stem with the period foundry mark "W.L. 30", confirming its genuine origin as a vintage Pattern Mold No. 30 casting.
Design & Historical Connections
Design & Subject: Features a bas-relief portrait enclosed in an oval medallion frame adorned with laurel leaves and berries, topped by an elegant ribbon bow knot with a hanging loop ring.
Artistic Inspiration: The portrait imagery is directly modeled after 18th-century royal commemorative medals—originally minted at the Monnaie de Paris (the Royal French Mint) and engraved by master artists like Pierre-Simon-Benjamin Duvivier and Charles-Norbert Roëttiers.
Function: Compact decorative wall hook—traditionally used as a pocket watch holder, key hook, or vanity hook for hanging pendants, necklaces, and earrings.
Material: Solid cast brass with a rich, natural age patina.
Condition
Good antique/vintage condition showing authentic surface patina, light wear, and casting character consistent with age. Please inspect all photos for close-up details.
