Description from the seller
Pair of ancient painted ceiling boards – Italy, 19th century
Splendid pair of antique solid wood ceiling boards of Italian manufacture, dating from the 19th century. These are authentic decorative architectural elements from an old wooden ceiling, originally inserted between load-bearing beams to form the closure and ornament of coffered ceilings in historic palaces, noble residences, or prestigious homes.
The boards are entirely hand-decorated with tempera pigments and feature a refined polychrome composition. The surface is marked by a succession of geometric panels framing elegant ornamental motifs in an 19th-century taste: floral scrolls, symmetric volutes, phytomorphic elements, and arabesque decorations develop harmoniously along the entire board, creating a refined chromatic and compositional balance. The decoration recalls the Italian artisanal tradition of the Restoration and decorative Eclecticism, where the richness of detail was meant to enhance representative interiors.
Made of solid wood, they retain the authentic charm of the time, with the natural patina of age testifying to their antiquity and originality. Any signs of wear, small abrasions, slight cracks, or imperfections should be considered characteristics of the age and contribute to their historical and decorative value.
Today this pair of boards represents a rare example of Italian architectural salvage and is particularly appreciated by collectors, antique dealers, and interior designers. Thanks to their strong dramatic presence, they can be showcased as wall decorative panels, boiserie, bed headboards, exclusive furniture elements, or repurposed in the restoration of historic ceilings, lending timeless elegance to spaces.
