Centre table - Wood

This pretty side table, with its sinuous, restrained lines, is a pleasant example of Piedmontese cabinetmaking from the second half of the nineteenth century. The piece stands out for its elegant, shaped top, a “biscuit” form that was very fashionable during the Louis-Philippe period, giving it a lighter, less severe look than earlier furniture.

The structure is entirely made from warm pale walnut, a timber widely used in Italian 19th-century cabinetmaking for its workability and pleasing grain. The decorative centerpiece of the piece lies in the top: at the center, a careful multi-point star marquetry in rosewood, precious exotic wood prized for its dark, deep hue, creates a simple yet striking color contrast. This is set within a circular frame also in rosewood, defining the perimeter of the central area.

The central support, a sturdy turned baluster with moldings that echo the period’s taste, ensures stability and elegance. It rests on a solid base with four curved, scroll-ended legs, a timeless hallmark of the Louis-Philippe style, which guarantees solidity while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing look.

Notes and Condition:
The table presents in good overall condition, with the original patina of time enriching its charm. There are no evident signs of invasive restorations, allowing small imperfections and normal signs of use on the top and superficial scratches to show its age and historical use (as seen in the close-up photos). The marquetry is intact. This piece, while not a museum-grade item of extreme value, represents an excellent starting point for those approaching collecting or seeking an authentic and functional antique object to furnish a corner of the home with tasteful decor, offering an interesting combination of nineteenth-century bourgeois elegance and the quality of materials and workmanship of yesteryear. It adapts well to both classical settings and more modern contexts that seek a touch of historical authenticity.
