Ancient Roman solid bronze votive ram figure from the eastern Mediterranean, dating to the 1st–3rd century AD, about 25.8 mm high and 44 mm long, with a curved body, raised head with curled horns and an integral curved lower support forming an openwork design; in good condition with a brown patina and some encrustations, not able to stand unsupported, certificate of authenticity available on request (pdf) for a sale price of €100 or more, and EU shipping only to valid addresses.

Ancient Roman solid bronze votive ram figure, eastern Mediterranean area. The animal has a long, gently curved body, slender legs and a raised head with prominent curled horns. The legs are joined by an integral curved lower support, creating an openwork composition.
The figure may have served as a small votive object, amulet or decorative fitting.
-> The ram was particularly associated with Mercury, the god of commerce, travellers and prosperity, and sometimes appears beside him together with the cockerel. Small bronze animal figures could be dedicated at sanctuaries as offerings made in fulfilment of a vow or in hope of divine protection and favour. Roman bronze statuettes of rams are known from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, although the precise purpose of individual examples may vary.

Condition: good solid condition with smooth brown patina and some earthen encrustations. The figure can not stand unsupported. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images.
