Rie Cramer (1887-1977) illustrated books all over the world, won many prizes and there are various exhibitions and surveys dedicated to her famous body of work. Rie Cramer went to art school in The Hague at a very young age. She began writing children's stories and making drawings. At the age of nineteen she already received a commission for the booklet 'Van meisjes en jongetjes'.
She also illustrated fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault (Fairy Tales of Mother Goose), Hans Christian Andersen and Russian fairy tales among others.
She provided the text and illustrations for a total of 120 children's and fairy-tale books and, as a regular illustrator, helped shape the look of the widely read children's magazine Zonneschijn. She was also a potter, designed costumes, ex-libris, decorative plates, menus and stage sets. Her peak achievements came in the twenties and thirties.
Rie Cramer was married three times, but she did not feel suited to family life and valued her freedom. From 1954 to the early seventies she lived on Mallorca with friends. When that was no longer possible, she returned to the Netherlands.
This lot contains a beautiful original painting of a princess, created by Rie Cramer for one of the children's books she illustrated. Original works by Rie Cramer are rarely, if ever, offered. Very special indeed.
The painting shows the beautiful Art Deco shapes and colors, which for a long time were characteristic of Rie Cramer’s work.
The artwork is signed bottom-right.
