Coin of 50 Pfennig issued as Notgeld by the Prussian province of Westphalia in 1921. The obverse features the bust of Franz Wilhelm von Fürstenberg, noted reformer, educator and statesman of Westphalia, surrounded by his name in Gothic characters, with a soberly styled portrait and excellent execution. The reverse shows the characteristic prancing horse, historic emblem of Westphalia, accompanied by the legend Notgeld, the province name, the face value of 50 Pfennig and the issue date. The specimen preserves much of the original detail, with only slight wear at the highest points of the relief, clean surfaces and much of the mints satiny luster, features fully in line with the AU58 grade awarded by NGC. This issue is part of the series of emergency coins produced in postwar Germany to alleviate the coin shortage, constituting an interesting testimony to the economic difficulties that preceded the German hyperinflation of 1923.
