Silver coin of 1 Kreuzer minted by the Free City of Frankfurt in 1863, a few years before its annexation by the Kingdom of Prussia. The obverse features the imperial single-headed eagle, the traditional emblem of the free city, surrounded by the legend STADT FRANKFURT, in a heraldic-inspired design executed with great restraint. The reverse shows the face value 1 Kreuzer and the issue date, framed by an elegant crown formed by laurel and oak branches joined at the bottom, a hallmark of Frankfurt’s fractional issues. The specimen preserves an excellent state of preservation, with well-defined relief, uniform fields and much of the original mint lustre, showing only light contact marks consistent with the MS61 grade awarded by NGC. This issue belongs to the last coins minted by the Free City of Frankfurt before losing its independence after the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, becoming an interesting testament to the complex political and monetary landscape of pre-unification Germany.
