Quarter-million Mark coin issued as Notgeld by the Prussian province of Westphalia during the German hyperinflation of 1923. The obverse features the bust of Franz Wilhelm von Fürstenberg, a reformer, educator, and statesman of Westphalia, surrounded by his name in Gothic characters, in a sober and carefully crafted portrait. The reverse shows the prancing horse, a traditional symbol of Westphalia, accompanied by the legend Notgeld, the province’s name, the face value of 1/4 Million Mark, and the issuing date. The design reflects the need to introduce increasingly higher denominations as a consequence of the rapid devaluation of the German mark. The specimen presents well-defined relief, homogeneous surfaces, and an attractive original satin shine, with light contact marks consistent with the MS63 grade awarded by NGC. These emergency issues constitute a valuable numismatic testimony of the 1923 hyperinflation crisis, one of the most significant monetary episodes in Germany’s economic history.
