The populations, which are today called the Gouro, initially did not represent a distinct ethnic group except in opposition to neighboring ethnicities. The Malinké gave them the name Lo, the Gagou called them Dipa, and the Baoulé called them Gouro, although this name may well be the distortion of Goura, which designates a tribe close to Baoulé country.
