This rare monograph captures the legendary Kabuki actor Onoe Kikugoro VI (六代目 尾上菊五郎, 1885–1949), one of the most celebrated stage icons of the 20th century.
Beginning in the 1930s, Kimura pioneered the use of handheld 35mm Leica cameras with fast lenses under natural stage lighting, departing from the rigid, posed theater portraits of the past. Through this innovative technique, Kimura captured the dynamic movement, subtle expressions, and dramatic intensity of Kikugoro VI’s performances with unprecedented realism.
